2.Post-Doctoral Research Associate

Applications are now being accepted for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate to work on data returned from the MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN) mission, funded through the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) and the Center for Research and Exploration in Space Science and Technology II (CRESST II). The MAVEN spacecraft is orbiting Mars doing a comprehensive study of the upper atmosphere and ionosphere, its interaction with the solar wind, and loss of the Mars atmosphere to space. The successful applicants will work on site at the NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center with scientists in the Solar System Exploration Division. The candidate will work directly with the MAVEN Project Scientist as part of the magnetometer investigation, participating in data analysis and scientific interpretation of the data, leading to the publication of results in scientific journals. Prior experience with magnetometer data analysis, scientific programming skills (especially IDL) and scientific writing experience are strongly preferred.

4. YALE UNIVERSITY: Postdoctoral Positions in Ocean, Atmosphere and Climate Dynamics

One or two postdoctoral positions in Ocean, Atmosphere and Climate Dynamics will be available at Yale University, Department of Geology and Geophysics (http://people.earth.yale.edu/profile/alexey-fedorov/about). General fields of research include ocean and atmosphere circulation, ocean-atmosphere interactions, the role of ocean in climate, climate variability and change, paleoclimate. Two particular topics of interest are (1) El Niño and mean tropical climate, and (2) stability, variability and predictability of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC). The work will involve numerical modeling, analyses of observational and GCM data, and analytical approaches. A PhD in physical oceanography, atmospheric sciences or related disciplines is required. Previous experience with ocean, atmospheric or climate GCMs is highly desirable. Funding is currently available for two to three years. Successful candidates can begin their program at Yale in winter-spring of 2018; later starting dates can also be discussed.

5.CIRES Visiting Fellows Program, University of Colorado Boulder

CIRES invites scientists to join the thriving community of researchers in Boulder, Colorado, through our prestigious Visiting Fellows Program. CIRES visiting fellowships are intended to stimulate interdisciplinary science within the institute through engagement with researchers on campus and in Boulder’s NOAA laboratories. Two-year visiting fellowships are available for postdoctoral researchers ($62,000/year), and terms of up to 12 months for senior scientists on leave or sabbatical (living expenses). Sponsored by CIRES Fellows, visiting fellows work with CIRES researchers on a wide range of environmental science topics. The CIRES Visiting Fellows program has attracted more than 345 scientists from around the world since 1968; many have gone on to careers in CIRES, NOAA, and CU Boulder. CIRES seeks to represent diverse researcher and university backgrounds in our Visiting Fellows program. We encourage applications from members of groups under-represented in the environmental sciences and related disciplines. Applications are now open and candidates are strongly encouraged to contact potential CIRES collaborators in advance of the January 9, 2018 deadline.

6. Hibernia Project Chair in Sedimentary Basins

The Department of Earth Sciences at Memorial University seeks candidates for the newly created Hibernia Project Industrial Research Chair in Sedimentary Basins (Ref: VPA-EASC-2017-001).  We are seeking a faculty member at the Assistant or Associate Professor level who will conduct and coordinate research on sedimentary basins from the basin scale to the individual petroleum reservoir scale. The Hibernia Project Chair is expected to build on existing petroleum geoscience expertise and research capacity at Memorial University and encourage and develop new collaborations between Memorial faculty and students and the oil and gas industry.

The position is a regular tenure-track, but partially funded by the Hibernia Management and Development Company Ltd. (HMDC ), the industry sponsor of the chair.  HMDC is responsible for management and operations of the Hibernia oil field.

The successful candidate will have research interests in the tectonics of sedimentary basins that may include, but are not limited to: 1) sediment provenance studies; 2) structure and tectonic evolution of sedimentary basins; 3) geological controls on the seismic response of sedimentary rocks and fluids in the subsurface environment; 4) sedimentary architecture, facies, and diagenesis and their effects on reservoir character, prospectivity, performance, and petroleum recovery; and/or 5) exhumation and thermal-burial histories of sedimentary basins.
