1. Postdoctoral Fellow – Hydroclimate Scientist

The Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium (PCIC) is a regional climate service centre at the University of Victoria that provides practical information on climate impacts. PCIC is seeking a postdoctoral candidate to work within the pan-Canadian Global Water Futures (GWF) research program (https://gwf.usask.ca) to study the impacts of climate variability and change on hydrology and water quality in western Canada.

Under the theme of ‘Climate and Diagnostic Hydrological and Water Quality Modelling’, the GWF proposes the development of a pan-Canadian hydrology/water quality multi-model system for assessment of hydrologic sensitivity under historical and future climates. In this context, this position is responsible for leading the development, enhancement and application of PCIC’s version of the Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC) hydrology model for select Canadian basins.

The candidate must have a PhD in the physical sciences, preferably in Hydrologic, Atmospheric or Climate science, have experience in the development and application of hydrologic or land surface models, and possess excellent programming skills (C++ and python being particularly useful).

6. PhD position

Subduction zones are primary drivers of plate tectonics, but little is known about how they start. In February-March 2018, an international experiment will image the newly-forming subduction zone beneath southwest New Zealand using seismic methods. We are seeking a student with a strong background in geophysics and a sense of adventure. He or she would participate in deployment of land seismometers to record arrivals from an air-gun source towed behind a ship, and earthquakes. Analysis of offshore and onshore geophysical data will be used to determine crust and upper mantle structure, and hence better understand how subduction zones form. The project requires fieldwork in remote areas and may involve boats and helicopters. The project is collaborative with the University of Texas Institute for Geophysics, California Institute of Technology, and GNS Science.

7. Assistant Professorship in Natural Hazards

The Department of Earth Sciences at Simon Fraser University invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professorship in Natural Hazards commencing as early as September 2018. A PhD is required, and post-doctoral research, teaching or industry experience is desirable. Qualified candidates will be considered for a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair (see below). The research activities of the successful candidate will complement the existing natural hazards research interests within the Department, while contributing to the expertise of the Department as a whole. Candidates with expertise in remote sensing, risk assessment and mitigation, field-based observation and/or laboratory-based studies examining natural hazards, in particular, geological hazards, are encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will develop a strong, externally funded research program, and supervise both Master’s and doctoral students. Teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate and graduate level courses, to support the environmental geoscience curriculum, for example, by teaching courses in Quaternary geology or environmental geoscience. The successful candidate is expected to eventually take on a leadership role in the Centre for Natural Hazards Research.
