1. U.S. Graduate Student Scholarships for the 2017 Urbino Summer School in Paleoclimatology (USSP)

The 14th Urbino Summer School in Paleoclimatology (12-28 July; http://www.urbinossp.it/) will provide graduate students with an intensive program on reconstructing the history and dynamics of paleoclimate through an integrated series of lectures, investigations, case studies, and field and laboratory analyses. To promote U.S. graduate student participation in this international experience, the National Science Foundation is providing support for ten scholarships to cover airfare, stipend, and course expenses (including lodging). Interested students in U.S. graduate programs should email a pdf file comprised of a one-page CV and a one-page statement on how the USSP would benefit their professional development as a researcher and educator to nsfusspscholarship@gmail.com.

2. Graduate Assistantship in Mountain Fire/Forest Ecohydrology

A graduate assistantship is available in MOUNTAIN FIRE/FOREST ECOHYDROLOGY at Washington State University in Vancouver, for a student interested in a PhD (already with MS) or an MS-PhD dual degree. Exceptional candidates wishing MS only will also be considered.

The core of this research is physical/soil hydrology. The research will address, broadly, plant-water relations and ecohydrologic recovery following forest fire, including aspects of soil science, plant water use, and hillslope/catchment hydrology. The qualified candidate is expected to develop during the beginning of their graduate studies a specific physical hydrology thesis/dissertation research topic based on their own interests within in this general area, in cooperation with supervisor Dr. Kevan Moffett. 3. Postdoctoral Research Scientist

The Dyhrman Microbial Oceanography Group at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University seeks one or more Postdoctoral Research Scientists to join the laboratory for research broadly focused on marine microbiology. 

 

Qualifications:  A PhD is required in microbiology, biological oceanography or a related field. Familiarity with microbiology, and/or biological oceanography, and computational biology/bioinformatics preferred.  Familiarity with the analysis of high throughput sequencing data including strong programming skills (e.g., R, Python, etc.) is preferred. 4. Part-time lecturer, 1-year, Mineralogy (Fall 2017) and Petrology (Spring 2018), Tufts University

Tufts University invites applications for a one-year appointment as part-time lecturer in the Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences (EOS) to teach a 2-semester sequence in Mineralogy (Fall 2017) and Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology (Spring 2018). 

 

The successful candidate will be expected to teach these courses along with their labs to mostly undergraduate Geology and Geological Sciences majors. The EOS Department is well-equipped for undergraduate study in mineralogy and petrology with a teaching lab that has petrographic microscopes, a comprehensive collection of minerals and igneous and metamorphic rocks, rock saws, thin section preparation equipment, and a scanning electron microscope with EDS capability. Tufts University is located in the Boston area and is near a diverse array of different igneous and metamorphic rock terrains conducive to field trips in New England.

 

Preferred qualifications include a Ph.D. in mineralogy or petrology and teaching experience in these disciplines.

8. Postdoctoral Researcher Position, Arctic-Boreal Ecosystem Modeling

SUMMARY: We seek a post-doctoral researcher with a focus on land surface modeling in boreal and arctic ecosystems. The successful candidate will work closely with the lead scientist and collaborators to assess how changes in climate, vegetation, disturbances, permafrost, and other properties have been impacting high-latitude carbon cycling using the Community Land Model (CLM). This position requires advanced Earth system modeling experience, including the ability to develop model code, conduct experiments, and manipulate large data sets.

 

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will:

· Lead model development for photosynthesis, respiration, phenology, and permafrost modules.

· Perform complex geoprocessing, including the application of benchmarks to multiple land surface models.

· Conduct model experiments to understand changing seasonal CO2 fluxes in boreal forests and arctic tundra.

· Analyze and integrate a variety of observational data, including remote sensing products, atmospheric CO2 metrics, and in situ fluxes.

· Work in a highly collaborative environment to analyze, synthesize, and present results.

 

Qualifications and Experience:

· Ph.D. degree in Environmental Sciences, Earth System Science, Ecology, or a related discipline, with a demonstrated ability to develop and apply land surface models (experience with CLM is preferred), conduct spatial analysis, and manage large data sets.

· Excellent ability to use relevant computing resources and learn new skills as needed.

· Knowledge of boreal and arctic ecosystems, vegetation dynamics, and carbon cycling.

· Ability to think and work across disciplines and scales.

· Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills, and the ability to work in a highly collaborative environment.
