Department Description:
The position of Lab and Facility Manager for the Canadian Ice Core Archive (CICA) is a research scientist appointment to manage the establishment and subsequent operation of the Canadian Ice Core Archive and its associated laboratory facilities and instrumentation. The incumbent reports administratively to the Executive Director of CICA, Dr. Martin Sharp. The position involves the oversight of a core storage facility, core processing laboratory, and an analytical facility that will initially house a line scanning camera, solid electrical conductivity measurement system, Picarro stable isotope analyzer, dual ion chromatograph system, particle size analyzer, and spectrofluorometer, as well as a core melter system designed to general input for continuous flow analyses of ice cores.
The incumbent will serve on CICA's Management Committee and its Ice Core Curation and Ice Data Working Groups. They will work with CICA investigators and external users to plan new scientific uses for the collection, to identify suitable material for specific uses, to design and construct specific workflows and core processing lines, and to schedule usage of the CICA facilities and provide training in their use. They will liaise with the managers of other UA labs (including trace metals, radiogenic and stable isotopes, organic contaminants, microbiology and genomics) in order to facilitate ice core research that uses these facilities. They will (in collaboration with staff from UA libraries) be responsible for accessioning the ice core collection and for developing and maintaining a digital database that relates to it.
The successful candidate will be responsible for day-to-day health and safety issues in the laboratory and for the administration of the facilities, including ensuring the continued running and performance of the cold rooms and instrumentation, quality control, supervision of technicians and facility users, and for scheduling, budgeting, and costing of services. They may also conduct independent research involving the collection and analysis of ice cores. This may include the training and supervision of undergraduate and graduate students in appropriate areas, and the planning of new ice core collection activities.
Working with the CICA Executive Director, Principle Investigators and Governance Committees, the facility manager will develop and implement a strategy to sustain and enhance CICA's capabilities and build its user base, and plan for the upgrading and replacement of CICA equipment as needed. They will also ensure that CICA operates in a manner consistent with the standards of other international ice core laboratories.
The successful candidate will have a PhD in ice core science, postdoctoral experience, and advanced knowledge and experience of relevant analytical techniques and instrumentation. Experience of ice core collection in the field and of collections management (including digital databases) would be assets. The position involves the co-ordination, supervision and interactions with a large number of students and faculty both internal and external to the university, including international visitors. As such, superior organizational and interpersonal skills are required along with excellent written/verbal communication skills in English.
The position is a full-time academic appointment at the Faculty Service Officer II level and formally reports to the Chair, Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. In accordance with the Faculty Service Officer Agreement, the position offers a comprehensive benefits package and an annual salary range of $75,404 - $104,828. The appointment is a continuing position with opportunity to progress through the Faculty Service Officer ranks.

The candidate selected for this position will be directly responsible for establishing an overall strategy for spectrum management within the NSF, setting NSF’s positions on a wide range of spectrum-related issues, and working within various national and international committees to further those positions. The successful candidate will also be responsible for making presentations at scientific conferences and to advisory bodies on spectrum-related issues, and will interface with government and private-sector spectrum-using entities to coordinate frequency use.
Depending on the expertise of the successful candidate, the program director also may have the opportunity to assist in the program management of other programs within the Division of Astronomical Sciences. This may include soliciting grant proposals, interfacing with current and prospective Principal Investigators (PIs), organizing and running proposal review panels, and making funding recommendations.
Candidates for this position must possess a Ph.D (or equivalent degree) in a physical science, mathematics, geoscience, computer science, or electrical engineering field plus, after award of the Ph.D., six or more years of relevant research or work experience. Candidates must have a good working knowledge of wireless engineering, radio astronomy, or related disciplines. Excellent communication (verbal and written) skills are required, as is the ability to operate effectively in a complex regulatory environment with multiple governmental and non-governmental stakeholders. U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain a security clearance at the secret level or above are required. Prior experience in radio spectrum management and experience in international negotiation and coordination are highly desired.

5.Quaternary Geologist
POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Quaternary Geologist will develop a research program in Quaternary geology and landscape evolution in Kansas, with special emphasis on the Pleistocene epoch. It is also expected that the individual in this position will interactively pursue outside grant/contract funding with other KGS and University geologists to further the understanding of Pleistocene deposits in Kansas and their implications for understanding groundwater resources and other environmental issues in the state. KANSAS GEOLOGICAL SURVEY:
The Kansas Geological Survey (KGS), a research and service division of the University of Kansas, is charged, by statute, with studying and providing information about the state's geologic resources. The KGS has no regulatory authority and does not take positions on natural resource issues.
Research at the KGS focuses primarily on energy, water, and the environment and addresses natural resource challenges facing the state of Kansas. The KGS also generates new information about the state's geology and develops tools and techniques for studying the surface and subsurface through its geophysics and mapping programs. *Job Description 85% Research: Conduct and publish the results of fundamental and applied research in Quaternary geology that is of national stature and relevant to Kansas. Develop externally funded individual and cooperative research programs in Quaternary deposits and environments focused on their paleoenvironmental and environmental applications to Kansas. Participate in KGS geologic mapping program as a lead mapper, in KGS geoarchaeological research program, and in collaborative geochemical research on the chronostratigraphy and paleoclimatology of Cenozoic deposits in Kansas.
10% Service: Participate in and serve in leadership roles in professional and scientific organizations. Serve on University and KGS committees and organizations as assigned or in response to opportunities. Provide technical assistance to KGS and KU staff in areas of scientific expertise. Provide external professional peer reviews of journal manuscripts and grant proposals.

7.Assistant/Associate Professor of Aquatic/Coastal Biogeochemist
The College of Science and the School of Coastal and Marine Systems Science (SCMSS) at Coastal Carolina University invites applications for a 9-month tenure-track faculty position with expertise in aquatic and/or coastal biogeochemistry. Applicants must have a PhD. in a relevant field. This position will have graduate teaching and mentoring responsibilities in the School’s masters and doctoral programs. The successful candidate will develop new areas of interdisciplinary research that use the resources of the School’s Environmental Quality Lab (http://www.coastal.edu/eql/) to build upon current strengths, involving members of the School’s faculty who include biogeochemical, physical, geological and biological oceanographers. The EQL is state certified for in-situ and bench analyses, including nutrients, BOD, TOC, fecal bacteria, and chlorophyll. This faculty member will serve as the director of the EQL, overseeing staff who support research needs and who run long-term water quality monitoring programs. The lab is comprised of 2578 square feet of lab space, a lab manager, seven technicians, and five work-study students. The School maintains a broad array of instrumentation and support staff well equipped for broad pursuits especially in geophysical seafloor and sub-bottom mapping, hydrodynamic observation and modeling, hydrogeology, and microbial and water quality analyses. A new 54’ research vessel is available for coastal and marine systems sampling.
