1.Postdoc Position in Hydrology Available at NASA/JPL

Department Description:

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), California Institute of Technology (Caltech) seeks a recent Ph.D. graduate with a unique background in hydrology, remote sensing, computer programming, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and a demonstrated record of multiple first-author publications. The position will be part of the Caltech Postdoctoral Scholars Program at JPL in the Atmospheric Physics and Weather Group, Earth Science Section.


Requirements:

The research will involve exploring almost all components of the water cycle and using various datasets from satellite remote sensing, in situ, or reanalysis. The emphasis will be on hydrology of cold regions including high latitudes and mountainous regions. Past experience in using precipitation from satellite (such as those used in the Global Precipitation Measurement mission; GPM), total water storage from the Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment (GRACE), and global hydrologic modeling is highly desirable. The Postdoctoral Scholar will build a framework for assessing regional to basin-scale water budget and hydrologic changes, interact with GPM and GRACE science team members, and publish scientific papers on the developed framework and results.

2.Assistant Research Scientist, Hydrologist/Spatial Analyst

The Division of Hydrologic Sciences of the Desert Research Institute (DRI) is seeking an Assistant Research Scientist with an emphasis in hydrology and geographic information sciences. This position will be based at DRI’s Reno, NV campus.

3.Hydrologist: Numerical Flow Modeler

The U.S. Geological Survey’s California Water Science Center is looking for a Hydrologist/Numerical Flow Modeler to join our team of scientists in San Diego or Sacramento, California. This is a permanent position with relocation allowances.

As a Hydrologist with the U.S. Geological Survey, California Water Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

• Serving as a project chief or senior project member on hydrologic studies of considerable scope and complexity. Planning, conducting and reporting on interpretive studies that typically require modification of established techniques or procedures and extensive collection, interpretation, analysis, and evaluation of hydrogeologic data.

• Developing complex three-dimensional computer models of the integrated hydrologic system, including the surface water and groundwater systems. These will include numerical simulations of systems using MODFLOW.

• Preparing reports of findings for complete hydrogeologic interpretive studies summarizing the results of investigations and technically reviewing parts of reports prepared by project team members.

• Serving as principal contact with cooperating agencies for identifying, designing, planning, and conducting water-resources investigations.

4.Assistant Professor - Extension Soil Water Quality Scientist

Oregon State University, Department of Crop and Soil Science, is seeking applicants for a 9-month, full time (1.0 FTE) tenure-track position as Assistant Professor in Water Quality Soil Science. The incumbent is expected to develop a nationally recognized extension and applied research program to assist agricultural producers in sustaining or enhancing crop productivity while maintaining or increasing surface and groundwater quality associated with surface and soil processes, leading to an extension water quality program that meets clientele needs and advances water quality management technologies across the agricultural landscape.

5.Stable Isotope Lab Manager

Job Description

The Department of Earth Science at Rice University seeks a full-time, hard money lab manager for our new stable isotope lab under the direction of Profs. Laurence Yeung and Cin-Ty Lee.

The lab currently houses three mass spectrometers, specifically:

  • Thermo Scientific Delta V Plus isotope ratio mass spectrometer for conventional stable isotope analysis (CHONS), with dual inlet, GasBench II interface, and Elemental Analyzer (Thermo Flash HT Plus)
  • Two high-resolution Nu Instruments Perspective isotope ratio mass spectrometers for clumped isotope analysis (O2 and CO2/carbonates), with house-built sample preparation lines

 

Required Qualifications:  

Minimum qualifications: M.S. in physics, chemistry, or a geoscience field with a minimum 1 year of hands-on experience maintaining mass spectrometers; computer skills, including some programming experience (e.g., Isodat, Labview, etc.); good oral and written communication skills.

Preferred qualifications: Ph.D. in an experimental physics, chemistry, or geoscience field with several years of experience maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing mass spectrometers; experience building custom lab equipment and custom electronics; experience with lab and recharge-center management. Interest in geoscience topics and approaches.

6.Remote Sensing/Spatial Ecology Internship

Description:

The Conservation GIS Lab at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI) is seeking interns, to start in June 2016.  We focus on conservation applications of GIS and satellite remote sensing for research and management of endangered species. Most of our projects focus on charismatic endangered species that are managed at our facilities and for which we have field ecological and conservation programs in the wild.  Examples are Asian elephants, Przewalski’s horse, Asian wild dog, and giant panda.


Required Skills & Experience:

·  Strong background in programming (R/Matlab/Python/etc.).  

·  Experience in processing dense time series remote sensing data.

·  Experience in process large raster datasets.

·  A good knowledge ecology and statistics. 

·  Basic knowledge of GIS (preferably ArcGIS or QGIS), remote sensing are desirable.
