2. Data Science Scholar
Arizona State University’s Future H2O invites applications for 1 postdoctoral scholar in the field of big/fast data analytics to begin in 2017.
Essential duties
The successful postdoc will work on big and fast data analytics for surface and subsurface model and data integration. Much existing research on big data has focused on “big volume”, which has spawn research and implementation on highly scalable, fault-tolerant data processing. There is a recent realization that big data systems should also be able to support “big velocity”, that is, to absorb and process high-volume incoming data in real time or with low latency so that timely information and insights can be derived for applications. This project aims to investigate the design and optimization of big and fast data analytics systems as applied to collecting, storing and processing field data relevant to monitoring trends and underlying interdependencies in surface and underground water ecosystems across large geographical areas. The project will involve (a) benchmarking large complex analytics workloads, (b) innovating in popular big data systems, such as Hadoop or Spark, with new algorithms for analysis of complex water ecosystems, and (c) optimization under multiple objectives including latency, throughput, and cloud computing cost.
Minimum qualifications
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Computer Science with a background in distributed computing with strong and demonstrated interest in IoT and Data Analytics. One or two research papers on related topics, as well as experience of implementation and experimentation with big data systems, are strongly preferred.
Desired qualifications
Hands on experience with development of Web Apps, deployment and management of Hadoop and Spark clusters, running large experiments in those clusters, and development of advanced data management tools will be highly regarded by the screening committee.

Position Summary:
Berkeley Lab’s Climate & Ecosystem Sciences Division has an opening for a Global Climate Postdoctoral Scholar. This role will work with Prof. Da Yang on the dynamics of tropical convection and atmospheric circulation, e.g., convective self-aggregation, the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), and the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). The research will include the use of observations and a hierarchy of numerical models, such as super-parameterized GCMs, conventional GCMs, cloud-resolving models (CRMs), and simplified theoretical models. You will work to advance our current understanding of tropical atmospheric dynamics by testing the existing theories and/or developing new hypotheses.
What You Will Do:
• Design and perform GCM and CRM simulations for tropical convection and atmospheric circulation.
• Analyze observations and model outputs to test existing theories of and to develop new hypotheses for convection and its interaction with large-scale circulations.
• Modify existing convection parameterizations in GCMs to improve simulations of the tropical atmosphere.
• Author technical reports and peer-reviewed journal articles.
• Produce and deliver oral and written presentations of scientific results.

The Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes Research (CIGLR) announces the 2018 Great Lakes Summer Fellows Program, in partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab (GLERL). The Great Lakes Summer Fellows Program exposes students to a broad range of disciplines and provides an exciting opportunity for students to conduct research in the Great Lakes region under the mentorship of a CIGLR or GLERL scientist.
Description:
We are offering eight (8) full-time, twelve-week positions. All positions are located at the NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL), 4840 South State Road, Ann Arbor, MI 48108.
Positions will last for twelve weeks from the start date. The start date will be in early May, but this can be flexible (i.e., early June start) based on the selected candidate’s schedule or project needs.
We seek to use these fellowships to increase diversity in STEM disciplines and strongly encourage applications from students who identify with groups that have been traditionally underrepresented in government and academic workforces.
There is a stipend of $6,500 for the twelve-week period, paid in two installments of $3,250.
Eligibility:
The program is limited to currently enrolled undergraduate (juniors and seniors preferred) and graduate students. We will also consider post-baccalaureate or post-masters students who have graduated within the past 12 months (of your fellow position start date) if the position fits directly within a student’s career goals.
You must be either a U.S. citizen or a foreign national who is residing in the U.S. on a current Student Visa.
