Job Description
We have an opening for the Project Leader and Principal Investigator of the Program for Climate Model Diagnosis and Intercomparison (PCMDI), a major research activity funded by the DOE Office of Science. You will direct an internationally-recognized research effort in climate science, including climate model diagnostics, model performance metrics, and climate change detection and attribution research, and you will provide leadership and community support for international climate modeling activities. This position is in the Atmospheric, Earth and Energy Division.
Essential Duties
• Provide technical guidance, leadership and vision for PCMDI.
• Enhance the capabilities and status of PCMDI by leading world-class research that employs multi-model ensembles of climate simulations for evaluating, diagnosing, and improving models, including understanding climate variability and change.
• Champion PCMDI’s contributions to the international climate modeling community, and provide leadership in the design of multi-model experiments and development of modeling infrastructure requirements and standards.
• Serve as primary spokesperson for communications with program sponsors on research progress, budgets and new programmatic directions.
• Foster effective communication between PCMDI staff, division management and upper management.
• Publish research results in peer-reviewed journals and deliver presentations at scientific conferences.
• Manage project budget and scientific progress of PCMDI.
• Lead the triennial project proposal and review process.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Position Summary:
Berkeley Lab’s Energy Geosciences Division has an opening for a Seismicity Research Scientist. You will lead original and independent research on energy-related induced seismicity to support various activities within our carbon storage, fossil fuel and geothermal energy programs. The Research Scientist will have in-depth skills and experience in (1) quantitative and observational earthquake seismology and (2) in physics-based and empirical modeling of earthquake occurrence that can be applied to assessing hazard from induced seismicity. A working knowledge of geomechanics and probabilistic seismic hazard analysis will be an advantage. This position will work with a diverse technical team both within LBNL and at other national laboratories. This position will be filled at the Career-Track or Career level, dependent on experience.
What You Will Do:
• In collaboration with other LBNL scientists, conduct original and independent research into simulation-based and empirical time- and space-dependent probabilistic hazard and risk analysis methods for earthquakes induced by fluid injection.
• Analyze and model seismicity data to detect and characterize induced earthquakes and develop empirical occurrence models, to calibrate earthquake simulations, and to characterize reservoir processes.
• Develop proposals and obtain funding for research projects in seismology and induced seismicity.
• Develop programmatic goals for induced seismicity hazard and risk assessment and reservoir characterization.
• Present research at meetings and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
• Work as part of a scientific team and interact with seismologists, geomechanics researchers and hydrogeologists to design and implement research projects.
• Collaborate with researchers in other national labs, government, academia and industry.
Additional Responsibilities as needed:
• Carry out data inversions to locate earthquakes and to determine velocity and Q structures and earthquake source mechanisms for reservoir characterization.

• PhD or equivalent experience in seismology, geophysics, or a related engineering field.

About the program
The annual Misasa International Student Intern Program for advanced undergraduate (3rd to 4th year) and graduate students, first initiated in 2005, is designed to promote international collaborative research and education. During the intern program, each student will work on an active IPM research project under the supervision of IPM faculty members and their research groups.
Successful applicants will participate in one of the following intern projects described below.
