2. 2 PhD scholarships: Sediment transport in aquatic canopies
Research project
A common feature of many coastal systems is the presence of large and complex bottom roughness (or canopies) on the seafloor formed by a wide range of different marine communities, including seagrasses, corals and mangroves.
Sediment transport is critically-important to the health of these ecosystems, as it can control the stability of the seabed, light availability, the efficiency of suspension feeding and the deleterious effects of turbidity plumes. However, the mechanics of sediment transport in canopies remains poorly understood.
We are seeking 2 PhD students to work on this new project supported by the Australian Research Council. One student will employ innovative experimental techniques to develop an understanding of the near-bed flow and sediment transport in these systems. The other student will design and execute field studies of this process in real canopies in the coastal waters of Western Australia.
Payment
This position includes an annual tax-free stipend of $30,000 (approx.). Qualified applicants who obtain an RTP scholarship (available for both domestic and international students) will be eligible for a stipend of up to $35,000 p.a.

3. Research Assistant/Associate Position - Boreal Forest Fire Effects
SUMMARY: We seek a Research Assistant or a Research Associate to support several projects related to NASA’s Arctic Boreal Vulnerability Experiment (ABoVE). The successful candidate will develop trajectories of ecosystem variables after wildfire in Alaska and Canada, and scale field measurements using remote sensing. Ultimately this research will inform fire management in northern systems.
