1. Executive Director, Division of Hydrologic Sciences
The Desert Research Institute (DRI) has an exciting opportunity for an Executive Director for its Division of Hydrologic Sciences (DHS). DHS has approximately 130 faculty and support staff and 20 graduate research assistants and conducts more than $11 million in research annually within a highly diversified research portfolio that includes hydrogeology, geochemistry, water resource management, global change, geostatistical and earth systems analysis, and ecological engineering.
The primary function of the DHS Executive Director is to support, facilitate, and expand Division research activities through leadership that augments and enhances the Division’s multi-disciplinary scientific skills. DRI has two main campuses in Reno and Las Vegas, NV; the position can be located at either facility.
Executive Directors are expected to apply leadership, management, and research program development and implementation skills as described in a few more detailed items below.
Provide leadership and direction to integrate the Divisional strengths, encourage interactions among Division scientists and anticipate areas of scientific growth and opportunity.
Make strategic decisions that move the Division forward by understanding its capabilities and role in regional, national and international settings.
Provide direction to faculty and staff to support scientific and programmatic needs.
Lead efforts in workforce planning and recruitment of new diverse faculty and staff.
Prioritize allocation of Divisional funds for development of research programs.
Connect with funding agencies to promote DHS capabilities and attract research funds that result in opportunities for faculty and staff.
Required Qualifications
Ph.D. or equivalent graduate degree from an accredited institution in water-related, civil or environmental engineering, aquatic geochemistry, or related field; or professional experience commensurate with an advanced degree.
Evidence of success in a setting in which a significant portion of funding comes from competitively awarded grants and contracts.
Evidence of innovation and success in leading research programs in governmental, private, or academic settings.
Demonstration of strong interpersonal, collaborative, and written communication skills built around a successful research program, including a record of peer-reviewed publications and a broad understanding of hydrologic sciences.
Ability to supervise/manage budgets, personnel, and human resource functions for organizations similar to DHS.
Any applicant must be a citizen of the United States and be able to obtain and maintain both US Department of Energy “Q” and US Department of Defense Top Secret clearances, which will require a background investigation by the Federal government with possible subsequent re-investigations.

2. President’s Professor of Fisheries and Ecosystems

The College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences invites applications for an Associate Professor/Professor of Fisheries and Ecosystems. While the position is expected to be hired at the associate or full professor rank, exceptional candidates at the assistant level will be considered. 3. Two graduate opportunities - Stream Restoration and Subsurface/Energy Geochemistry
Applicants are sought for two funded graduate opportunities at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Department of Geography & Earth Sciences, beginning August 2018:
(1) Stream Restoration: This interdisciplinary research examines the impact of restoration on a 6 km2 urban forested watershed. Overall project goals are to determine how watershed-scale restoration influences water quality, macroinvertebrate recovery, and groundwater-surface water interactions. Applicants with interest in groundwater-surface water interactions and their relationship to stream chemistry are especially encouraged to apply. Students will pursue independent research problems within the scope of this project while supporting a multi-year monitoring program in the restored watershed. 4. Visiting Assistant Professor
The Department of Geological Sciences at Ohio University invites applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor in petrology to begin August 16, 2018. 6. Post-doctoral research associate: Aquatic landscape ecology and applied hydrology
We are seeking a highly motivated post-doctoral research associate to contribute to efforts that will characterize limits to and conservation opportunities for fluvial fishes and their habitats throughout the United States. The research associate will have two sets of responsibilities:
1. Contribute to on-going efforts to model distributions of fluvial fishes throughout their native ranges. In support of this task, the research associate will contribute to developing species distribution models using established analytical approaches as well as developing recommendations and other products based on results to aid in conserving fishes from both current and future threats. The research associate will work closely with colleagues from USGS to ensure that outcomes from this work, including data, analytical procedures, and modeling results, can be applied by a diverse group of stakeholders nationally.
2. Develop an approach to characterize the degree to which stream flows may be modified by human influences over large spatial extents. In support of this task, the post-doctoral research associate will aid in organizing a working group of national experts on stream flow. With input from this group, the research associate will conduct a review of available stream flow data sets and models, describe their comparability, coordinate the synthesis of comparable data, and document both steps and needs for assessing the degree to which flows may be modified by human influences in different regions of the United States.
